Moving in a Minnesota Winter: Tips for a Smooth Cold-Weather Move
How to plan a safe, smooth move when it’s snowy and cold.
Moving in Minnesota between November and March takes a little extra planning. Snow, ice and short days can slow things down, but a winter move can go smoothly with the right preparation. Here is how to make it easier.
Watch the forecast and stay flexible
Check the weather several days out and again the night before. If a major snowstorm or extreme cold is on the way, talk to your movers or truck rental company about options. Build a little flexibility into your schedule when you can.
Start early in the day
Winter daylight is short. Start as early as possible so you are loading and unloading while it is light, and roads are more likely to be cleared.
Clear a safe path
- Shovel and salt walkways and steps at both your old and new place.
- Keep an ice scraper, shovel and ice melt in your vehicle.
- Lay down cardboard or old rugs near entrances to protect floors from snow and slush.
Coordinate with your new property management team about where to park the truck and when the entrance will be clear.
Protect your belongings from the cold
Some items don't handle freezing temperatures well:
- Electronics: let TVs and computers warm up to room temperature before turning them on to avoid condensation damage.
- Liquids: cleaning supplies, paint and some foods can freeze. Move them in your heated car if you can.
- Plants: wrap them and transport them in a warm vehicle.
- Wood and glass: wrap furniture and fragile items well, since cold can make them more brittle.
Dress for the job
Wear layers, waterproof boots with good traction and gloves with grip. Keep warm drinks and snacks on hand for everyone helping.
Keep the heat in
Propping doors open for hours will cool things down fast. Open doors only while carrying items in and out, and close them between trips.
Set up utilities before you arrive
Make sure electricity and gas are active on move-in day so you walk into a warm home. Schedule internet installation in advance, since appointments can fill up.
Pack a first-night box
Include essentials you will want right away:
- Blankets and bedding
- Toiletries and medications
- Phone chargers
- A change of warm clothes
- Basic kitchen supplies and snacks
- Towels and a doormat
Prep your vehicle
If you are driving a rental truck or your own car, check tire pressure, top off washer fluid and keep an emergency kit with a blanket, flashlight and phone charger. Leave extra time between stops, and take corners and ramps slowly on icy roads.
Settle in after the move
- Check that windows close tightly and report any drafts to your property manager.
- Find out where to park during snow removal.
- Learn how to submit maintenance requests, just in case.
- Put a boot tray by the door to keep floors clean all season.
